I would like to wish everyone a happy Double Ten Day (or 10/10)!
What is Double Ten Day? Double Ten Day is the Taiwanese holiday celebrated on the tenth of October which commemorates the start of the Wuchang uprising that led to the fall of the Qing dynasty in China. In short, this is Taiwan's "independence" day. Festivities are held in the capital (Taipei) in front of the Presidential Building. These festivities include the singing of the national anthum, the raising of the flag and a massive military prade accompanied by performances by representatives of Taiwan's minority groups. Following this grand show is an elegant party at the president's mansion and an impressive fireworks display.
Last year I was lucky enough to be invited not only to the Presidential Building celebrations but the President's after party as well. This was truely a once in a life time experience and I am so glad that I am among the few foreigners that has been invited to join in this wonderful celebration. I hope that someday Taiwan will be able to celebrate 10/10 openly without fear of oppression from China!
